《Dancing in a Waking Dream》並不是從一個明確的想法開始的。它更像是一種我不斷回到的感覺，有時甚至在一開始並沒有意識到它的存在。這種狀態通常出現在安靜的時刻——行走時、靜坐時，或只是沒有特定意圖地傾聽時。某個瞬間，感知會產生變化。不是突然的，也不是那種會強烈吸引注意的變化，而是細微到讓原本區分「內在」與「外在」的界線逐漸變得模糊。
我對這種狀態很熟悉。它既不是睡眠，也不是一般的清醒。更像是稍微站在自己思緒的後方，同時又完全處於當下。聲音似乎更貼近，空間也變得更深。時間則恰到好處地延展，使一切能在沒有壓力的情況下自然展開。
歌詞開頭提到的海岸線，不僅僅是一個物理上的地點。對我而言，它是一種臨界點——一個事物不再清楚分隔的地方。海洋、森林，以及另一個人的存在，開始以一種非人為構築、而是自然呈現的方式彼此連結。
與另一個人一同在那裡行走，會多出一層難以在不簡化的情況下說明的經驗。那是一種不依賴對話或定義的親近感。你能感知對方的存在，但那並不會帶來緊張。更像是在同一個場域中一起移動。這種存在不是透過協商建立的，而是被共同經驗著。
當我寫下「Your hand in mine, a quiet symmetry」這句話時，它正是來自這樣的經驗。那不是比喻，而是一種直接的觀察。在那樣的時刻，存在著一種不需要刻意維持的平衡，它自然地成立。
第一段後半出現的森林，也不只是意象。我一直將森林視為一種幾乎會立即改變感知的場所。聲音的回響、空間的密度、光線的流動方式——這些都會影響我們如何聆聽與思考。你會更容易察覺細微的變化，同時整體的脈絡也變得更加清晰。
「Kami」這個概念是在沒有太多思考的情況下進入文本的。我並不是刻意要把它寫進去，而是這個詞正好描述了一種我持續經驗著的感覺。它不是一種信仰，而更像是一種感知的方式——一種認知：存在並不僅限於可見或可測量的事物，而某些場所彷彿帶著自身的關注或氣息。
在這首作品中，我並不打算對這點做出明確定義。我希望它保持開放。「Kami」不是角色，也不是會主動做出行動的存在。它們只是存在於那裡，而這種存在本身就改變了整體的感知方式。
音樂的結構也緊密地對應這樣的經驗。延展的前奏對我而言非常重要。我需要那段時間。如果沒有它，後面的發展會失去根基。在創作這類作品時，我往往會在前奏的狀態停留很久，才讓節奏進入。這是一種讓自己對齊氛圍的方式，而不是過早地去建構它。
當節拍終於出現時，我並不把它視為一種新增的元素。它更像是某種原本就存在、但較不明確的東西的延續。動感變得可聽見，但它其實早已存在。
親自錄製人聲也讓整個創作過程產生了明顯的變化。當你自己唱出這些句子時，會產生另一種責任感。你無法與它們保持距離。我發現自己需要做的是減法，而不是加法。任何過度的表達都會顯得不自然。聲音需要停留在與音色與空間相同的層次中，而不是凌駕其上。
第二段進一步往內收。寺廟、燈籠，以及時間感的改變，都與一種外在結構逐漸失去重要性的經驗相關。在那種狀態中，時間不再是用來測量的，而是用來經歷的。
整首作品中也流動著一種安靜的「記憶感」。這並不是敘事性的記憶，而更像是片段——一些無法完全歸屬於特定時刻的印象。當我寫下「Every memory feels borrowed now」時，指的是某些經驗似乎並不完全屬於自己，而更像是經過你、穿過你。
Bridge 可能是整首作品中最直接裸露的部分。那裡出現的是我自己也無法回答的問題。我刻意讓它們保持原樣，因為一旦給出答案，它們就會被縮減。「Are we shadows in another life」並不是要傳達某種結論，而只是那種狀態中自然浮現的提問。
「Stay… stay… Don’t wake yet…」則是我在這類時刻中反覆出現的念頭。總會有一個瞬間，你意識到這個狀態正在消退。然後會出現一個短暫的嘗試，想要停留其中，即使你知道它無法被保留。
在最後一段，並不是透過增加元素來擴展，而是視角本身的開展。個人的感受逐漸融入某種更難以界定的狀態。連結、記憶與存在，不再是孤立的事件，而是更大連續性的一部分。我們並不總是能意識到這點，但偶爾會觸及它。
當音樂逐漸淡出時，我希望它給人的感覺不是結束，而更像是從某種狀態中輕輕退開。最後的海聲也不是終止，而是一種回到作品開始之前就已存在之物的感覺。
這首作品非常貼近我對某些感知狀態的實際經驗。它不是對那些經驗的詮釋，而是一種盡可能貼近其本質的嘗試。
